Posted in the topic A debt collector called my mom and sister looking for me. Is this even legal? (Need advice) in the forum Off-Topic Discussions
    October 6, 2026 9:04 AM PDT

This happened yesterday and I’m still shaking a little bit. I have an old credit card debt that went to collections a few years ago. I’ve been trying to get back on my feet, but I’m not quite there yet.

Yesterday afternoon, my mom called me freaking out. She said a guy called her cell phone, asked for me by name, and when she said I wasn't there, he told her he was "trying to serve me papers" and that I was in serious legal trouble. Then, an hour later, my younger sister texted me saying some random number called her asking if she knew where I worked.

I never gave these people my family's numbers. I feel incredibly embarrassed and violated that they dragged my family into this. My mom is elderly and now she’s panicking thinking I’m going to jail.

I started looking into this and found a guide on Protection for Consumers about What to Do When a Debt Collector Contacts Your Family Members, which helped me understand that they usually can't do this. I guess I’m just looking for reassurance. Has anyone else dealt with this? How do I get them to stop calling my family? I want to handle my debt, but this feels like harassment.
