BALTIMORE -- The vast change in the Baltimore Orioles over the past couple of years can be measured by their success against the Boston Red Sox, even when their AL East rivals send Jon Lester to the mound. Austin Rivers Jersey . Chris Davis hit his major league-leading 23rd home run, Nick Markakis had four hits and scored three runs, and Baltimore beat Lester and the Red Sox 6-3 Sunday. Manny Machado extended his hitting streak to a career-high 14 games and drove in a run for the Orioles, who took three of four from first-place Boston to move within 1 1/2 games of the division lead. Baltimore has won six straight series over the Red Sox, dating to last year. Before going 13-5 against Boston in 2012, the Orioles hadnt taken a season series from the Red Sox since 2004. The metamorphosis is even more apparent when gauging their performance against Lester. Prior to last September, when the Orioles charged into the playoffs for the first time since 1997, Baltimore was 0-14 against the Boston right-hander. They beat him on Sept. 21, and Sunday they tagged him for five runs in five innings. "Obviously we have a different group here," said Davis, who was 0 for 14 lifetime against Lester before ripping a 3-1 pitch in the third inning for a two-run homer that put Baltimore up 3-0. After striking out in the first inning, Davis took action. "Went in there and looked at some video just to get an idea of what hed been doing to me in the past," he said. "I know I hadnt had a lot of success. If you give him both sides of the plate and try to hit all those pitches you make it tough on yourself. I was able to get ahead of him and get a good pitch to drive." It was his 100th career homer and seventh in the last 10 games against Boston. Davis also doubled in a run in the fifth against Lester, sending the Orioles on their way to their 14th win in 19 games against the Red Sox, including five of seven this season. "They dont beat themselves," Boston manager John Farrell said. "Typically they throw strikes, theyre not going to issue many walks. They play very sound defence and they have the ability to score a couple of runs on the swing of a bat." Will Middlebrooks hit a three-run homer for the Red Sox and Jose Iglesias stretched his hitting streak to 17 games with an eighth-inning single. Baltimore starter Miguel Gonzalez (5-2) took a two-hitter and a 5-0 lead into the seventh. He ended up allowing three runs and five hits in 6 1-3 innings to improve to 3-0 lifetime against Boston. "It was fun to watch our hitters hit, especially against Lester," Gonzalez said. "Hes been doing a great job this year and always pitched well against us." Jim Johnson worked the ninth for his AL-leading 25th save and second in the series. Lester (6-4) fell to 14-2 lifetime against the Orioles, 7-1 at Camden Yards. The right-hander struck out eight but yielded nine hits. "Theyve always been able to swing the bats, theres no question as far as coming in here and pitching against that lineup," Lester said. "Theyve always been a good offensive team." Not this good. The Orioles outscored Boston 17-12 in the series and had 14 hits, seven for extra bases, in the finale. Baltimore took control with a three-run third. After Adam Jones doubled in a run, Davis hit a drive far over the right-field wall. In the fifth, Markakis doubled and scored on a single by Machado before Davis hit a two-out RBI double for a 5-0 lead. Middlebrooks made it interesting with his ninth home run, closing the gap to 5-3 in the seventh. In the bottom half, however, Markakis doubled and scored on a single by J.J. Hardy. STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Mississippi State is out to prove its recent jump in Southeastern Conference status is no fluke. The Bulldogs program has enjoyed nearly unprecedented success over the past two years, largely thanks to star quarterback Dak Prescott. But Prescott is now in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys, leaving Mississippi State to fend for itself in the difficult Western Division.Safety Brandon Bryant is among the young players who said Mississippi State will miss Prescott, but can be successful without him. There are new faces and new names on every team in the SEC, Bryant said. Everyone in the SEC has the talent, were just ready to go out there for everyone to display it and start playing.Preseason camp started with four quarterbacks -- Nick Fitzgerald, Damian Williams, Elijah Staley and Nick Tiano -- fighting for the job. That list dropped to three when Staley was granted his release and will transfer.Bulldogs coach Dan Mullen is confident all of them can run the teams offense, which has often been dependent on the quarterbacks ability to be a dual threat. There isnt a guy that isnt a good runner so were not limiting you, Mullen said before Staleys departure. None of the skill sets of any of the four quarterbacks is going to limit what we do.The Bulldogs do have some experience returning on defense. Linebacker Richie Brown should anchor the middle of the field after leading the team with 109 tackles last season, including 13 for a loss. Defensive end A.J. Jefferson had 13 1/2 tackles for a loss last season and veterans like Bryant and Kivon Coman will lead the secondary. Here are a few other things to know about Mississippi State:LISTEN TO THE SIRMON: Mississippi States defense will be led by new coordinator Peter Sirmon. The 39-year-old, whoo played seven seasons in the NFL with the Tennessee Titans from 2000-06, comes to the Bulldogs after two seasons at Southern California. Cheap Swingman Clippers Jerseys. Sirmon says hes pleased that his players have adapted to his coaching so quickly. Said Bryant: Its been demanding, but its been great. With all new coaches it is different, but they came in with the attitude of making us all better. We fixed what we needed to do in the spring, now were just ready to roll.ROSS, HOLLOWAY KEYS TO OFFENSE: Mississippi State might still be looking for a quarterback, but it already has some experienced playmakers. Senior receiver Fred Ross returns after catching 88 passes for 1,007 yards and five touchdowns last season. Brandon Holloway is probably the teams most versatile player -- he gained 413 yards rushing, 396 yards receiving and 567 yards on kick returns last season.KEY GAMES: The Bulldogs have four winnable SEC home games against Auburn, Arkansas, Texas A&M and South Carolina. If Mississippi State can take care of business at Davis Wade Stadium, any success on the road will be a bonus. Theres also an interesting non-conference game on the road against BYU on Oct. 14.PREDICTION: Mississippi State will miss Prescott, but should have enough talent to advance to a bowl game for a seventh straight season. The Bulldogs will be competitive in the West, though a lack of elite playmakers makes it difficult to see them near the top with programs like Alabama and LSU.SEASON OPENER: Mississippi State hosts South Alabama on Sept. 3.---Follow David Brandt on Twitter: www.twitter.com/davidbrandtAP---AP College Football website: www.collegefootball.ap.org Cheap NFL Jerseys Cheap NFL Jerseys China Cheap Jerseys From China Cheap NFL Jerseys Authentic Wholesale Jerseys China Cheap NFL Jerseys China NFL Cheap Jerseys ' ' '
